Big data is data that contains greater variety arriving in increasing volumes and with ever-higher velocity (Gartner’s definition, circa 2001).
The massive volumes of data can be used to address business growth, identifying problems and providing insides for solutions.
Allow me to take to same steps back and tell you a bit more about the history of big data:
Although the concept of big data is something quite new, it has been used since the 60’s and 70’s. And that was just a start. But, around 2005, people started to realize its importance, as Facebook, Google and Youtube were massively growing this digital world we are living in. Hadoop (an open-source framework created specifically to store and analyze big data sets) was developed that same year. NoSQL also gained its name in the industry during this time (Oracle).
Hadoop was developed to make big data easier to work with and cheaper to store. And with that, it was easier to explore big data’s benefit, as it was becoming more accessible for companies. Not mentioning that companies were also realizing how useful and important it is to explore it.
It is a fact that one thing was taken to another, such as big data to AI and Learning Machines and so on. The Internet of Things (IoT) was connecting all devices and collecting more and more data to be analysed.
People were seeing the effects of this fenomenal as reading the data, reaching numbers that could actually answer things that so far were pure guessing as no number could prove such a thing.
How does big data work?
Integrate
All the data collected is put together, we just have to bring in the data, process it, and make sure it’s formatted and available in a form that your business analysts can get started with.
Manage
You can use the cloud to store the data you want in the format you want. It is the way you prefer to store them.
Analyse
Here is when the fun begins, when you analyse actions taken to improve your business. You get all the insides to improve your business, to optimize campaigns, to improve customer journey and so on.
